When Saratoga Dermatology added a second board-certified dermatologist to serve its patients from Albany, Schenectady, and around Saratoga Springs, NY, they found the perfect fit in Dr. Jennifer Smith. Dr. Smith, a Mohs surgery specialist with an impressive track record of treating patients and teaching future dermatologists, joined our team in 2012.
Education & Training
Dr. Smith’s impressive background includes graduating summa cum laude from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor’s degree in history. The Kansas native then earned a medical degree from the University of Arizona School of Medicine, graduating with the highest honors as a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.
She then moved to Lubbock, Texas, where she completed a 3-year dermatology residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Smith became a board-certified dermatologist in 2003.
Practicing What She Teaches
After completing her dermatology residency, Dr. Smith served as an assistant and associate professor of dermatology at Texas Tech University. Not only did she teach medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology techniques for 10 years, she also continued seeing patients during this time. She has performed thousands of procedures, ranging from cosmetic injectable treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers, to Mohs surgery for skin cancer.
Certified Mohs Surgery Specialist
In 2004, Dr. Smith became a fellow of the American Society for Mohs Surgery. As a Mohs specialist, Dr. Smith has performed thousands of these procedures, which have been clinically shown to have a success rate ranging between 95 and 100%.
The Mohs technique is a meticulous, precision-based procedure that involves minimal tissue removal. Dr. Smith evaluates tiny slivers of skin under a microscope to ensure the removal of all cancer cells.
We incorporated Mohs surgery into our practice shortly after Dr. Smith arrived in Saratoga Springs, providing our patients access to this advanced, highly successful technique.
Honors and Professional Associations
Dr. Smith served as chief resident during her dermatology residency at Texas Tech, where she also later earned patient satisfaction awards in both 2009 and 2011. The dermatology department honored her with the “Unsung Hero” Award in 2009.
She serves on the Laura Bush Women’s Health Initiative Executive Council, a position she’s held since 2007, and belongs to the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and the American Academy of Dermatology.
